Son of a *&^%!!! Why won’t this thing woooork??!!

Ron Smith, reporter/producer for EKU’s public radio station, WEKU

Let me first say, the firmware updates and the strange little “ninja shield thingy” for the newish Pocket Wizard TT5′s have improved the range and reliability a great deal. But, when I was assigned to make a portrait inside a radio station studio… i was foiled again by those tricky little things. I consider myself a pretty darn good trouble shooter and when a problem presents itself unexpectedly I usually figure it out fairly quickly. I impressed myself again… by ditching my initial plan and shooting this image available light. Take that TT5′s. Apparently, the bulletproof ninja garments are no match for SERIOUS RF interference. You know, the kind you might encounter at a flippin radio station. Should’ve crossed my mind before hand.

I just got my new Lastolite Ezybox and was looking forward to taking that thing for a ride. Was gonna throw in some wicked color with my new Honl gels and such. No luck. At the risk to looking seriously incompetent I changed directions and… well… gave up.

So it doesn’t sound like I’m bashing these things, I shot a wedding a couple weeks ago (after the radio studio fiasco) and the TT5′s performed with 99.9% reliability. They were awesome. I stuck stobes all over the place. Gels and all.

Also, just this past Saturday I shot basketball with them and was able to record strobed images (as advertised) at 1/500th. That was most definitely cool.

All in all, I really like these units. But, every now and then they surprise me with inconsistency.
